192.168.1.1 is a private IP address and also a default gateway address for most of the routers and modems. It is a very common IP address and is known as the host address through which the router can be accessed and it can be configured through the router configuration interface. Other such addresses include 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.100.1.

From the router configuration interface, you can configure everything about your wireless network right from the SSID and passphrase of your wireless network to complex settings such as Network Management, IP QoS, DNS, proxy, LAN, WAN, WLAN settings, etc. All of these can be managed through the default gateway address of your router/modem.

How to login to 192.168.1.1?

Here is how you can log in to the router configuration interface of your router through 192.168.1.1. For you to be able to log in, you need to make sure that the default gateway address for your router/modem is 192.168.1.1. Sometimes, the default gateway address is other than 192.168.1.1 due to which your browser is unable to access anything.

  1. Open the browser that you use to access the internet.
  2. Open a new tab and in the URL/Address bar, type 192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.1.1 and press Enter.
  3. If the gateway address is correct then you will be taken to a login page, where you will have to enter the login username and password to proceed.
  4. Enter the login credentials to continue. (You can find the login credentials of your router from the internet or look for it on the box of the router.)
  5. Once you enter the login credentials, you will be logged inside the router configuration panel and make the required changes from there.

Make sure you’re typing the IP address correctly, users often mistaken it with 192.168.l.l (note it’s an alphabet “l” instead of numeric “1”) which when loaded will return invalid page.

How to change SSID and Wireless Password through 192.168.1.1?

One of the most common things that people want to know is how can they change the SSID (name) and password of their wireless network. When you buy a new router then the SSID of the wireless network is usually the name of the manufacturer along with the model of the router and password is a random combination of alphabets, digits, and special characters.

So, to change your SSID and password, here is what you should do. It is necessary that you are connected to your router either wirelessly or using an ethernet cable.

  1. Open a web browser and log in to the router administrator/configuration panel using the aforementioned method.
  2. Once logged in, go to the Wireless section or Wireless Network. (Depending on manufacturers, the exact name and procedure may vary but the basic procedure is the same)

Forgot Login Username/Password

This is a common thing that many people face, they forget the login username and password for the router’s admin configuration panel and hence are unable to access the settings of the router. People either change the login username/password or don’t know the login credentials at all. If you found yourself to be in such a situation where you have forgotten the login username/password then the easiest solution to that is to perform a factory reset on your router and login using the default login credentials.

To factory reset your router, follow these steps:

  • Look for the hidden RESET button at the back of your router.
  • Take a needle or paper clip and press & hold that button for 10-15 seconds and after that let it go.
  • The router will reboot and after it starts up, everything will be reset to defaults and you can log in using the default credentials.
